Your brain deserves more than a coffee break
When stress starts affecting the way you think, remember and function, it may be time to stop pushing through and do something about it!
You walk into a room and completely forget why you’re there. You open your laptop to answer one email, get distracted and, 20 minutes later, you’ve forgotten what you were doing. You lose your train of thought halfway through a conversation. Recalling people’s names and words seem to disappear just when you need them.
And the explanation is usually:
“I’m just tired.”
“I’ve got too much going on.”
“I haven’t had enough sleep.”
And sometimes, it is.
But when forgetfulness, poor concentration and mental fatigue become part of everyday life, your brain may be telling you something important:
You’re not necessarily forgetting more.
At Urban Bliss Wellness Spa in Johannesburg, we see how stress, poor recovery, hormonal changes and emotional overload can affect the way people feel and function, we offer solutions to support and help you.
What does stress have to do with brain fog?
Stress is not inherently bad.
Your body is designed to respond to stress. Cortisol, often referred to as the stress hormone, plays an important role in helping you wake up, stay alert and respond to challenges. The problem is what happens when stress stops being occasional and starts becoming your norm, with constant:
- Deadlines.
- Notifications.
- Family responsibilities.
- Poor sleep.
- Hormonal changes.
- Multitasking.
- Emotional pressure.
Your nervous system rarely gets the opportunity to switch off because too much is going on at the same time. Over time, this can contribute to feeling mentally exhausted, overwhelmed.
You may notice:
- Difficulty concentrating
- Forgetfulness
- Slower thinking
- Trouble finding words
- Mental fatigue
- Feeling easily overwhelmed
- Poor decision-making
- Irritability
- Difficulty switching off
- Feeling tired but unable to relax
This is what many people describe as brain fog. And while brain fog can have many possible causes, chronic stress and inadequate recovery can be important pieces of the puzzle.
The stress–sleep–brain fog cycle
Here is where things can become frustrating.
Stress affects sleep. Poor sleep affects cognitive function and feeling mentally foggy can make you even more stressed.
Stress → poor recovery → mental fatigue → reduced focus → more stress
The Cortisol cycle is a 24-hour natural rhythm that peaks in the morning to help you wake up and drops at night to help you sleep.
How the Daily Cortisol Cycle Works when your body is regulated:
- Early Morning (2:00 AM – 3:00 AM): Levels start to rise while you sleep.
- Morning Peak (Wake-up to 60 minutes after): This is the Cortisol Awakening Response (CAR), levels spike to give you energy and focus for the day.
- Afternoon Decline: Levels start slowly dropping as the day goes on.
- Nighttime Low : Levels drop to their lowest point during deep sleep so your body can rest and repair
However, when you have Cortisol running high all the time from constant stress and the body is unable to go into its normal rhythm it disrupts sleep. Let’s paint the full picture– You start the day already tired. You rely on caffeine to get going or skip breakfast which in turn alleviates cortisol further. You push through your workload. By the afternoon, your concentration disappears, so you find it difficult to get through tasks pushing up Cortisol again. At night, you’re exhausted because your mind can’t switch-off, your mind still racing so your Cortisol levels don’t drop to its lowest, so you can’t sleep or don’t get good quality sleep. Then you wake up and do it all over again, you get stuck in this loop.
Sound familiar?
This is why supporting mental clarity isn’t simply about trying to “focus harder”.
Sometimes the answer is recovery, regulation and understanding what is driving the overload in the first place.

Tired but wired? This May be YOU
One of the most frustrating experiences of chronic stress is feeling completely exhausted while simultaneously being unable to switch off.
You’re tired but your mind keeps going, you feel drained during the day but strangely alert when you should be sleeping. This “tired but wired” feeling can be associated with prolonged stress and an overactive stress response. This is particularly relevant for women navigating perimenopause and menopause, when hormonal changes can also influence sleep, mood, energy and cognitive function.
If you’ve been wondering whether your symptoms are stress, hormones or a combination of both, our recent article, Perimenopause or Just Stress? The Hidden Signs Every Woman Should Know, explores this connection in more detail.
Practical ways to help your stress recovery
Supporting your mental clarity doesn’t have to mean completely changing your life we suggest that you start with the basics.
Sleep.
Give your brain enough time to recover.
Movement.
Regular physical activity supports both physical and mental wellbeing.
Nutrition.
Your brain needs consistent nourishment — not just caffeine or sugar because of convenience.
Stillness.
Your nervous system needs moments without constant stimulation.
Connection.
You don’t have to carry everything alone.
Recovery.
Rest isn’t something you earn after you’ve finished everything, it is part of how you function well and allows your body and mind to de-stress.
Our article, The Power of Touch: Why Self-Love Begins with Filling Your Own Cup, explores how intentional touch and therapeutic treatments can form part of a broader approach to recovery, relaxation, nervous-system support and wellbeing.
When your body says slow down, listen.
Sometimes the first signs of stress aren’t dramatic, they’re subtle. You could just feel overwhelmed by things that normally wouldn’t bother you or you stop enjoying the things you used to enjoy and eventually, feeling exhausted becomes your normal.
But it doesn’t have to, your brain isn’t a machine that can run indefinitely without maintenance. Slowing down isn’t being lazy, its about taking care of yourself for tomorrow and beyond. For when you have family time you present, for when you have a big project you focused and when you on holiday you can enjoy it and be so fatigued that you don’t have energy to enjoy it.
